Flemington Green Fields Flemington Green Fields

Flemington Green Fields is dedicated to raising awareness of environmental sustainability and the VRC's sustainability programs. In 2007 the VRC introduced a Sustainability charter that guides all staff and suppliers in their operations at Flemington Racecourse. Since 2008 with the assistance of our sustainability partners, the Flemington Green Fields program has created initiatives intended to achieve the highest standards in responsible event and venue management.

With the assistance of our sustainability partners, Flemington Green Fields aims to reduce the environmental impact of the Flemington racecourse creating tangible results

AGL has provided 100% GreenPower for all 22 racemeetings held at Flemington during the 2009/10 season, including the four days of the Melbourne Cup Carnival

SecondBite, in conjunction with Peter Rowland and our panel of accredited caterers redistributed unused food from Flemington. During the 2009 Melbourne Cup Carnival 1.485 tonnes was collected providing 3,000 nutritious meals to local charities; food that would otherwise go to landfill

Cleanevent extended its waste minimization program, recycling 271 tonnes and achieving 54% diversion from landfill (up from 26% in 2008), and together with major partner James Boag, set up recycling stations across Flemington

The VRC, supported by VISY and SecondBite, has developed a Recycling and Sustainability Education program. Part of this program included communications for the 2009 Melbourne Cup Carnival featuring renowned environmentalist Rob Gell. At Flemington a team of ambassadors was deployed within the members and the general public to educate racegoers on waste minimisation this team were a factor in the 54% diversion from landfill.
